Interesting Find #10

Category: .linksAmit Bahree @ 9:47 pm
  1. Squeaky Geek to Silicon Saint; number 5 is my favourite.
  2. Bar da Boa – wait for the flash to finish loading (be patient); enter your First and Last names and click on "Visualizer" – lol.
  3. MSR's InkSeine – which allows you to find stuff with ink, seems quite handy if you use a tablet; some videos here; you can get it here.
  4. TSA is blogging – now you can vent your frustrations!
  5. In case you ever wondered, how ASP.NET uses memory? Especially handy when one started running out of memory.
  6. Xperf – a new tool in Windows SDK.
  7. Feeling nostalgic? Check out ScummVM.
  8. Sony Ericsson's new Windows Mobile based phone – quite cool.
  9. Apparently, multi-functional printers are the latest security threat.
  10. Apparently quite a handful of people have had Vista wifi issues whereby a laptop resuming from Sleep/Hibernate cannot connect to the wifi; resetting the wireless card does not help and only a reboot fixes it. It might not be baloney and there is some truth to the matter.
  11. Reading these real world examples of online data loss (HA! it was online so you thought you won't lose it), makes me feel quite smug about my WHS.

Category: .microsoftAmit Bahree @ 8:34 pm

An article is discussing what possibly could be part of Vista SP1 whenever it ships, either later this year or early next year. And on the topic of Vista SP1, another rumor is that Vista SP 1 Beta will be out sometime next week.

Book might be out sooner

Category: .booksAmit Bahree @ 11:13 pm

I think the WCF Book that I recently finished is out earlier than a week and should be available on Jan 15th instead of the 22nd, however Amazon still shows the availability of Jan 22nd. Big Smile

Update on Problems installing VSTS 2005 Dec. 2004 Refresh

Category: .ms.futureAmit Bahree @ 8:28 pm

If you recall my previous post on VSTS installation blues, I got an answer from MS on that. It seems like installing Yukon Beta 2 did it. Per Microsoft, uninstalling Yukon won’t also help and it is better to rebuild the OS and then go from there. You can read it on the discussion thread here. I guess, there goes another evening in rebuilding a machine.

Debugging Indian Computer Programmers

Category: .booksAmit Bahree @ 1:54 am

Picked this story up on slashdot, so you might have already seen it there. Well I can speak of this first hand, though the write-up is intriguing, this is something I would get and read up and only then provide my perspective. Have any of you read this, if so what are your thoughts?

The H1-B visa program allows many thousands of non-American technical workers (about half a million at the moment) to hold jobs in Silicon Valley and elsewhere in the U.S. – jobs which are seemingly difficult to fill from the American labor pool for a variety of reasons, and which are eagerly filled by employers who find that qualified, talented people come from countries all over the world. N. Sivakumar’s first-person account of being an Indian programmer working for companies in several U.S. states over the past decade illustrates a side of the H1-B system that doesn’t get talked about much: the experience of skilled, highly educated workers taking jobs in an environment that offers, besides welcome employment, various levels of hostility and resentment. Read on for my review of his book, Debugging Indian Computer Programmers: Dude, Did I Steal Your Job?
