Windows 7
Wow! What a week - so much talk of the next version of Windows code-named "7". Of course the multi-touch (see video below) is what everyone is talking about. Now, this is cool because it is the evolution of the Surface which is scaled down to a screen. If you have not seen a Surface - it is quite big and works with five infrared cameras which picks...
ADO.NET vNext CTP
If you have not already heard, then there is a new CTP of ADO called ADO.NET vNext which adds support for both consuming and creating EDM (or Enterprise Data Modeling which some people know as Data Modeling or more commonly known as Entity-Relationship Models ). If you want to get a quick overview of what this provides, then check out the 13 min demo (via...
Vista speech recognition (actually) works
MSNBC might not like it , but as Long Zheng shows, Vista’s speech recognition actually works .
.NET 3.0 RTM?
NeoSmart highlights about the fact that there is a possibility that .NET 3.0 might RTM in a couple of months. What would this mean? Well a couple of things. One, hopefully MS has gotten their act together and stop making huge breaking changes in every public drop. While I understand that every CTP is still early in beta and with the nature of these things...
Microsoft Codename Max
I recently came across Microsoft Codename Max (cross-posted via Shawn ), which seems very promising however I have not had a chance to install it as it requires Jan CTP of WinFX and I currently have June CTP running on one of my primary machines. I could install a VM with that but honestly cannot be bothered. If you have had a chance to play with it I would...
IE 7 Beta 3 Woes
When the new IE 7 bits were originally released - I forget if it was late last year or early this year - I had installed them to have a play, but that was such a shoddy release that I quickly uninstalled and happily continued to use Firefox. A while after that Beta 1 was released which I did not touch and although some of my brave colleagues installed it...
Vista's Address Space Layout Randomizer
Shipping with Vista Beta 2, there is a new security feature called Address Space Layout Randomization (a.k.a ASLR); other than being a mouthful, this helps defend against buffer overrun exploits. It does this by moving the entry points into the system dll's around randomly in memory. Its all about odd, and there are 256 locations it can be loaded in, or...
Office 12 Beta 2 now available
If you are part of the Office 12, you might have already received the email detailing that Office 12 is out at http://beta.microsoft.com . On the other hand, it is also available on MSDN if you have Universal Subscription. If you don't have either, seems like Microsoft has opened the beta to more people, and you can get the beta 2 (which will run till Jan...
Sharepoint v3 Installation Fails
I was trying to setup Sharepoint "v3" which is part of Office 2007; the Beta 1 Technical Refresh installs without a problem, but when I try and configure Sharepoint it fails in Step 2 and I get the error shown below. You can click on the image to see the full size. However, when I trawl through the log file, I did find a few exceptions, a couple of which...

System Stability Chart in Longhorn
If you go to the Computer Management tool in Longhorn (Dec CTP), then you will something called the System Stability Chart, which shows you how stable the system has been including Software Installs/UnInstalls, Failures (including Apps, Drivers, Hardware, Windows), etc. Its pretty cool and should help narrow down cause of failures - quite helpful in a corporate...

Whats next for Next Generation Apps?
eWeek has an interview with Don Box , where he talks about what is next from Microsoft in terms of the next-gen apps. He talks about what is most interesting in his space, between Indigo, WWF, LINQ, etc. Also what you should think of as an Enterprise Architect when designing your contracts - WSDL-First or Contract-First.
WinFX Nov CTP support VS 05 RTM
If you read my earlier post you would know you could not get WinFX running with the RTM version of VS 05, but now that MS publicly just released the Nov CTP of the WinFX that is compatible with VS 05 RTM, so you can breathe in peace. :) As always there are three pieces you need to get to, one is the WinFX Runtime itself (2.68 mb), two is the VS 05 WinFX...
Office 12 Beta 1 is out
Office 12 Beta 1 was release today, unfortunately due to various NDA clauses, I cannot get into too much detail at this time. But slashdot has the story and there are screen shots of it by pcmag here . All I can say is that this is probably the only time I am more excited about this than when I moved from Lotus Notes to Outlook 98. :)
Office 12 XML Schemas
Now that the PDC is done, I can get to talk a little more about Office 12, I have been playing with it for a few weeks and has some very interesting things, but more on that later this week. But, now you can get the proposed schema for Office 12 applications. This of course is draft and is a preview, so I won't start writing anything against this other than...
Pretty hefty hardware requirements for Vista
If you have been thinking of getting a new machine or upgrading your existing one, you might want to hold off a bit on that if you can for another few months as it seems like Windows Vista (what was called as Longhorn), will have some pretty hefty hardware requirements - e.g. you would need a AGP with at least 128 mb RAM (preferably 256 mb). If you want...
Vista Beta 1 now available on MSDN
A colleague of mine, pointed this out and seems like MS has released the Beta 1 for Longhorn (now called Vista), on MSDN . If you are universal subscriber you can download it. But, its a hefty 2.GB d/l! Below is my screen shot from my login.

Microsoft E-Learn for Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 is free (till launch)
What better way to learn these new technologies other than going through Microsoft's e-learning courses including the hands on labs from TechEd, etc. for free. But you need to hurry, as this offer is valid only till launch (i.e. first week of November). If you already have the Virtual PC (VPC) image, then you can go here for SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio...
Monad - what is it?
Recently there has been a lot of hype and talk about Monad Shell (a.k.a MSH), not sure why, but such are the state of things. What is Monad? Simply it is the new command line interface to the Windows Server OS and is code named Monad Shell. It is fairly powerful and has its roots set in VMS and AS400 environments. I would check out the quick demo (15 mins...
Update on ClickOnce
Well it seems I stand corrected (sort of), and these are rare moments so enjoy it.. *grin*, seems like it was a user error (again sort of - in a minute on that) when I talked about the issues with ClickOnce earlier. The problem there was that the installation can only be supported via http and not using ftp (which I have chosen), once you change it to http...

ClickOnce Bug (in Beta 2 of Whidbey)?
Last few days I have been messing around with the Beta 2 edition of Whidbey (now its called VS.NET 2005, but I still prefer Whidbey). If you recall my previous post about ClickOnce , my experience so far has not been good. I imported my clock applicaton (more on the issues importing it at another time) to Whidbey and tried to deploy it but for some reason...
.NET Framework 2.0 Beta 2 Obsolete APIs
In the Beta 2 version of the .NET Framework 2.0 product, there are various APIs that have been added in since V1.1, but are marked obsolete. All of these APIs will be removed from the product at V2.0 release. These are APIs which were added during the beta cycles of the V2.0 product lifetime, but as a result of design changes and/or product feedback, have...
Transactional NTFS in action
I came across this blog entry talking about the new transactional NTFS in action ; very interesting and very cool (yes this is in Longhorn - you can check out some screen shots). What is more interesting is that internally people at MS have started using it, but the question that comes to mind is, is that outside of Longhorn (are there any bits running on...
Got a space to play with ASP.NET 2.0
Not sure if you were keeping an eye or not, but I got some space to play with ASP.NET - something that is exposed to the net and not only my machines at home - does bring up some interesting possibilities. If you want me to upload some code that you might have to run then let me know, we just need to coordinate as I cannot create subfolders (unfortunately...
Entlib fails to compile in VS.NET 2005 Beta 2 (sort of)
I was playing around with Whidbey (finally), the Beta 2 drop and decided to check out if Entlib compiles. After converting the project (ping me if you need screen shots), there were a whole bunch of errors. Well, in reality not errors but warnings. Since, by default VS.NET 05 treats warnings as errors, the build fails miserably. Once I got around to setting...
